Obchodná Akadémia /Business academy/ provides 2 forms of vocational education at the present:
1 – 4 year secondary education
Age of students: 14 – 18
Length of study: 4 year, full-time education
Specialisation: international marketing
Subjects: - 2 foreign languages /combination of English, French and German/
Exams: - the final exam called “maturita exam” at the end of studies
- it consists of 2 parts: 1/ practical written exam
(professionally oriented)
2 /oral exam (2 languages, special subjects)

Age of students: 18 – 20, after finishing secondary education

a/ European Youth Academy
Our school has been involved in the European Youth Academy since 1993 which has been organised by Alpen-Adria-Alternativ in Villach with a support of the Council of Europe and Ministry of education in Austria.
This Project was approved by the European conferences of UNESCO and the Parliament assembly of the Council of Europe in Strassburg. Our students have been cooperated with young people from 16 European countries during four periods. It concerns development of cross - cultural relations as well as creativity of young people and professional development of people in education.
Last two academies could not do without using new technologies and media by means of which it is possible to gather information, to develop mutual communication between schools and headquaters. The topics done so far: we live together in Europe, to improve the school life – workshops of the future, culture of peace, communication with new media.
Teachers together with student representatives have taken part at 10 seminars and 4 European meetings in Villach.
They could improve and develop their knowledge and skills of the foreing language command, what is more, this event was a good possible for getting materials to teach professional terminology in the foreign language.
In fact, our school has prepared two international seminars within the Project.
b/ Socrates – Lingua E
Title: A professional cooperation in dvelopment of tourism in European countries: French – Slovak cooperation in practical training.
The project coordinator is Ecole Nationale de Commerce in Paris.
In the course of the project there have been organised two preparatory visits, one in Slovakia, the second one in France. The aim of both visits was to negotiate coordination of the content and organisation in terms of the project building procedures.
In February 2001, 16 students and 2 teachers from the partne school in France stayed in Slovakia and worked on the project tasks. The similar stay of Slovak students will be held in France, in October 2001.
c/ Comenius
Our achievements together with experienced and capable teachers make us feel confident to carry on these activities and that is why we would like to apply for the project Comenius in 2001.
Theme: Professional and language cooperation in tourism of European countries introduced by the example of the cooperation between France and Slovakia.
d/ The other projects
One of our teachers, Mrs E. Masná, has taken up and taught a special subject called applied economy since the beginning of this school year. Although the subject has an optional base, it has been a kind of practical training for students who have been fully motivated and involved into activities which have a problem solving character and have been the part of the Junior Baťa Achievemnt programme.

The teachers of English iniciated establishing a self – asccess centre in the school with the aim to support and improve conditions of learning English in the school.
The SAC has been contributed financially and with materials form the institutions like the British Council, Zdravé mesto /a fundation/, the board od parents at Obchodná Akadémia Skuteckého 8, Banská Bystrica.
In SAC, the students can find files with authentic material from English speaking countries /books, textbooks, magazines, pictures, maps, worksheets with grammar and vocabulary etc./ The purpose of SAC is to divert the process of learning from teacher – centred to learner – centred as much as possible and to promote autonomy learning.
